HelpAction.Org Joins The Fight Against Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer families face a new set of challenges during the coronavirus pandemic as they continue their fight.
El Paso, TX: As the pandemic puts additional emotional and financial strain on families contending with childhood cancer, some look to organizations such as Movie4Kids are donating over 3,000 Masks for families and children in treatment, in order to ensure families never have to worry about having enough disposable masks during their multiple visits to the hospital for treatment. Candlelighters which is the main hub of support for financial and emotional assistance for families who have a child dealing with cancer, will be coordinating their most at-risk families to put in their mask order to HelpAction.Org Volunteers.
HelpAction volunteers will now receive additional alerts, aside from grocery delivery requests, notifying them of masks requests; directing them to pickup masks from Candlelighter’s main office and redistributing them to the address of the family who requested the masks.
Every second counts for a person in crisis. HelpAction.Org connects people with the help they need right when they need it through the power of text messages – because no one should fear falling through the cracks.
Our platform was designed to provide emergency delivery services for essential items to those most in need through. From populations deemed at-risk: the immuno-compromised, healthcare workers, single parents, those who have lost income or are recently unemployed, and especially those who are self quarantining due to infection. We wish to help ease the uncertainty and anxiety surrounding this global pandemic for those who have no readily available options.
Cancer and cancer treatments can weaken the immune system. This means that a child with cancer is often at higher risk for infection and illness. Patients who are undergoing active treatment for cancer are presumably at higher risk than those who are in remission.
In general, cancer can lower immunity and make it harder to fight infection in different ways:
- The cancer or cancer treatment can lower the number of immune cells that attack germs.
- Cancer treatments, including radiation and certain medicines, may weaken the skin or membranes lining the mouth and digestive tract. This can allow some kinds of germs to enter the body more easily. We don’t yet know if this affects risk in COVID-19.
“I know that helpaction.org is going to benefit a lot of people in the community because I was in a position in early March where i was asked to self quarantine my family and, as a single mother, to just get your most basic essential goods was nearly impossible without the help of friends and family members and your extended community.
And unfortunately there are people who don’t have a large network that can help them with those things. So as a community, isn’t it our responsibility to then become that network of people and help each other out?” – Shaenna Summers, Volunteer
